What are Biofilms?

by Amanda Rioux

In this post, I will tell a little bit about the topics the biology students are working on. I will offer simple definitions of some of their areas of study.

Biofilms.

Many of the students are studying biofilms. So, what are biofilms?

How biofilms develop

Biofilms are a collection of microorganism (such as viruses, or bacteria), which stick together and, often, also stick to a surface of some kind, such as ships.

Both Kenny and Abhi are currently studying biofilms. While Abhi is looking at how various factors impact biofilm growth, Kenny is focused on the early stages of biofilm development.

Biofilms play many important roles, including the breakdown of pollutants. However, little is know about how they function. This has peeked Abhi’s curiosity, and drew him to want to find out more.

Kenny is interested in how biofilms can be studied from an evolutionary standpoint to understand the origin of life on earth.
